About Books ......
I like the books by Maran Graphics. I especially like the Simplified series, specifically Windows 98 Simplified for it's easy chapters on Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. I particularly like the colorful graphic illustrations that intentionally display instructions that work whether you know terminology or not, i.e. whether you know where your task bar or title bar is or not. I DO NOT care for the Dummies books but that is a personal preference that hinges on your sense of humor. I think new computer users are fragile enough without labeling themselves DUMB before they open the book. This could take me into my harangue about Confidence and Computers which I will not go into here but will eventually cover in a page here about Personalities and Computers. I've ordered the $6.95 copy of "Wired in a Week" from AOL simply because it uses my favorite word "Wired'. I'll let you know what I think after I get it. Maran Graphics has an AOL guide also, but my feeling has been, if AOL doesn't make it self friendly enough for a new user, it has failed it's entire purpose. Most people can load it and get it working enough to send and receive email with no help whatsoever. I will be doing a page on it though to show you some tips and tricks that they don't bother to tell you. |
