Your Anti-Virus program will update itself online automatically.
You may need to click Norton configuration & Scan to schedule it to perform a full virus scan daily or weekly.
These days you must also scan for spyware. Spy Sweeper, Spybot, and others
are programs that run much like the anti-virus programs. They update
themselves, scan your activity, do periodic hard drive scans and then report
"infections" and "clean" your computer.
Windows Update
This is also set to automatic although it may ask you if it's OK to install
updates. For Vista users, your updates are offered in a window instead of the
web site.
Defrag is available in your Accessories menu. It organizes your hard drive
so files aren't so scattered. This prolongs the life of your hard drive
because it doesn't work so hard.
Backup backup backup.
I like to use flash drives ..small ones for accounting. Large ones will
hold everything else. These connect in your USB ports and are pretty fast.
Other backups can be done on CD and also on DVD. You'll be glad you did!
